Bodegas Martínez Paiva is a family-owned company with a tradition of over five generations in vine cultivation and the elaboration of quality wines in Extremadura.

Our secret

We are pioneers in the introduction of new cultivation techniques and varietal wines in the Tierra de Barros area, near Almendralejo (Badajoz), the authentic wine “capital” of Extremadura.

The winery has 350 hectares of vineyards, mainly planted with domestic varieties such as Tempranillo, Graciano, and the autochthonous Cayetana, similarly having small productions of other domestic varieties (Carignan (also known as Mazuelo), Muscat …) and international Merlot, Syrah (or Shiraz) or Chardonnay.

Our vineyards are located in marl and clay soils, fresh vertisols with a high limestone content and sufficient depth, which enable the roots to seek the necessary moisture during our harsh summers. The combination of the terrain with the orientations and microclimates of the area which enables obtaining quality grapes to elaborate complex wines.

Know-how and innovation

The elaboration of our wines commences with the vineyard layout, valuating and exploiting the characteristics of the terrain. The culmination of the work in the vineyard comes with the determination of the optimum moment for harvesting, after which the grapes are taken to the winery as carefully and gently as possible for the fermentation process.

In the winery, the grapes are subjected to a series of actions as stress-free as possible to extract its best qualities, combining traditional techniques and cutting-edge technology. During these processes, the combination of the daily physical-chemical analysis plus the tasting and knowledge of our oenologists which is conducive for our wines to acquire their personality.

Ageing and rest

The ageing of our wines takes place in 300 litre capacity American and French oak barrels, for a period between 12 and 24 months. Therein the malolactic fermentation culminates, followed by different decantings and stirring techniques. Subsequently, the wines rest in bottles for at least 12 months until obtaining their character and personality.
